What is Cohousing?

Cohousing is a type of intentional and collaborative housing in which residents actively participate in the design and operation of their physical space. Cohousing residents consciously commit to living as a community, yet all residents maintain their own private homes, which contain all the features of a conventional home. Additionally, residents have access to extensive common facilities as described below under common area.

For nearly 25 years the River School Farm developed beautiful gardens and recreational amenities along the banks of the Truckee River. In the past three years Tom and Iris Stille have transferred ownership of the property to the Dancing River Community LLC (DRC). They are building several new duplex homes one of which is nearly completed. There are more homes in the design and planning stage.

Homes for Sale

There are two 750 sq. ft. apartment homes for sale now. Each home features solar assisted radiant heat, super insulation, large loft area supported with tree trunks, passive solar design, operable skylights for passive cooling, and a metal roof. One of the two units has a 1/2 bath up in the loft.

Prices range from $235,000 to $ 248,000. The units will soon be sheet rocked and are ready for kitchen and bath cabinets, counter tops, light fixtures, paint, and appliances to be installed. If you buy now, you can select the finishing touches for your unit.

Common Area

The common area is comprised of three building areas. 57% of the property is commonly owned by DRC members. The Common House has four rooms. The largest one is a multipurpose room used for dance, yoga, class room, community functions, and indoor events. The lounge includes a library, mail center, and entertainment area. The guest room is in the southwest corner next to the wheel chair accessible bathroom with shower. In addition to the Common House, our common area includes: access to the river beach, recycling center, tool room, amphitheater, pathways, and several sheltered terrace areas with views of the Truckee River.
